2. Now you can repeat this observation watching the habits of overweight people and notice how they differ.
Take a few moments now to think about your own style of eating – would it be more like the thin people or the overweight ones? And what changes could you make for the better?
Work through the apps in this book and see what other more helpful solutions you could find for your problems.
As another guideline – real hunger gets registered in the body gradually. It begins with a gentle, empty feeling that continues to build up over a period of half an hour. Imagined hunger, on the other hand, often strikes suddenly as a desire to eat that simply pops into our minds out of nowhere. This type of hunger is the brain’s desire for a ‘change of scenery’. Placing food on the tongue sends an instant message up to the brain, exciting a different part of it, quite literally taking our mind ‘off’ things, which makes us feel relaxed and happier.
What Do I Really Want?: Remember, too, that if you’ve become accustomed to answering every signal and message that your brain sends you with a bite to eat, then you’re never really listening to what your body is telling you. And as a result, you’re never really responding to those signals in the right way.
People who feel bored and irritated by their jobs will stuff their faces with snacks all day, sometimes never realising that what they should really be doing is perhaps taking on a more interesting or challenging role elsewhere.
Many people who live alone eat throughout the day without realising that their body’s desire to move its mouth is more a need for conversation than food. Picking up the phone and seeking out some company would be a better bet.
Each time you place a piece of food in your mouth when you are not really hungry, then it’s not only another occasion when you are literally making your body larger, but yet another occasion when you are missing out on doing whatever it is the ‘inner you’ would really like to be doing. How much longer are you going to be content with missing out? Life is short – it would be good to start right now.
Pay Attention!
If you can’t properly pay attention to your body’s signals when you are eating, you will gradually become one of those people who is never quite sure when they are hungry and when they are not. I say ‘become’ because as children we are born with a natural ability to recognise the signs of hunger and fullness.
Eating consciously is going to be the key to losing weight. So what is conscious eating not?
• It’s not in front of the TV.
• It’s not standing up.
• It’s not in the car, on the bus or walking down the street.
Conscious eating is not eating crisps straight out of the packet, because as your hand disappears into the packet and then moves straight up to your mouth, you don’t get a chance to see the food itself.
